How to compress a photo for WhatsApp

Reduce a photo’s weight so it sends better, keeping reasonable quality. WhatsApp has no single universal cap published here.

Compressing a photo before WhatsApp is about reducing weight and making sending easier, not about hitting a magic number. The app may treat the image again when it receives it; still, starting from a lighter file helps.

What you can and cannot expect

ToolZen compresses JPEG, PNG and WEBP on the server. It does not convert HEIC. It does not publish a WhatsApp megabyte cap because that figure changes and depends on how you send the file. Success is a valid, lighter image, not a fixed percentage.

Compress the photo step by step

  1. Use a format the tool acceptsJPEG, PNG or WEBP. If the photo is in HEIC (typical of iPhone), export it to JPEG from the phone first.
  2. Compress the imageUpload it to compress image and download the result. It keeps the same format; there is no guaranteed saving percentage.
  3. Send it as a file if quality mattersAttach it in the chat. If you want to keep more detail, many clients let you send it as a document instead of a gallery photo.

If the photo is huge in pixels, resizing it a little first usually saves more than compressing blindly. For a web form the criterion is different: lighten it with the upload in mind, not the chat.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is WhatsApp’s limit?

WhatsApp applies limits and recodes photos depending on the client, the network and whether you send it as an image or as a document. There is no single figure we can guarantee here: compress to lighten it and, if sending fails, try as a document or shrink it a little more.

Does it look bad after compressing?

A phone photo usually slims down with a small loss. An already light screenshot PNG may barely change. Open the result before you send it.

Does it also remove the location?

Compressing often strips metadata, but if privacy is your priority, use the guide to removing GPS location from a photo.
